Most know the saying, “When life gives you lemons, make lemonade.” I prefer margaritas, but that is neither here nor there. The idea being, when life gets hard we need to make the best from it. But, I’m not sure I agree with that. I quite like the following quote.
“When life gives you lemons, don’t make lemonade. Make life take the lemons back! Get mad! I don’t want your damn lemons, what the hell am I supposed to do with these? Demand to see life’s manager! Make life rue the day it thought it could give you lemons! Do you know who I am? I’m the man who’s gonna burn your house down! With the lemons! I’m gonna get my engineers to invent a combustible lemon that burns your house down!” ~J.K. Simmons
Too often we are willing to take what life gives us, never persevering for more. If we are dealt a tough hand we say, “Oh well that is just the way it is.” However, I don’t believe we need to curtail to the struggles, but instead learn to thrive from them. It’s easy to believe that nothing good can come from a hard circumstance, but these times hold with them so many possibilities. The toughest of seasons can bring with them the biggest opportunities for growth and transformity, taking you to the next level.
As Albert Einstein said, “Crisis is the greatest blessing for people and nations, because crisis brings on progress… It’s in crisis that inventive discoveries and great strategies rise. He who overcomes a crisis overcomes himself without being ‘Overcome.’”
My best piece of advice is this- Don’t lose focus! Have a plan, set a goal and stick to it. When struggles come (and they will) keep yourself focused on what you can control. We have an inate tendancy to lose focus and this will lead to emotional disaster. We get stressed, depressed and overwhelmed. Keep you eyes on what you have, what you want and how you can get from here to there. Life leaders target what is within their control. And then, go tell life to, “pucker up!”
